There are many types of functional groups in an umbrella group (large group) of organic compounds. The types are named according to the element other than carbon that replaces a hydrogen on a hydrocarbon. 

 

The functional groups can be categorized based on which elements replaces a hydrogen on a modified hydrocarbon. The hydrocarbons are a group by themselves, and can be divide into three types, according to their bonding types.
